Everybody’s journey to parenthood is unique. It might be more traditional or totally outrageous. Before beginning fertility treatments, you and your partner are a family, looking to expand your love to welcome a child to this world. Each step of fertility treatments makes you grow, learn, and build up your strength along the way.
I became a parent in the untraditional way. But in today’s society, it is much more common than you know. We conceived through in vitro fertilization (IVF) after a long road of fertility treatments, a late pregnancy loss, and a lot of heartache in between. It might not be the way I dreamed of having a family, but I take it, as this was my destiny to parenthood.
Getting pregnant naturally is a gift that should be cherished. In my case, it was the complete opposite – we had to endure so much pain just to accomplish that gift. Infertility is not a choice; it is a medically diagnosed disease. Some think it is a choice. Until you have walked in the shoes of someone who has been there, you would never understand. So why is this path chosen for us? I still wonder today after becoming a parent – “WHY ME?”
Take your journey as your own – relate but don’t compare. Today, more and more people are sharing their stories and getting support from family, friends, and seeking out professional help. For the emotional part of infertility, it is imperative to be able to release in order to move forward. It is hard to say where your journey will take you, but always hold on to HOPE.
Some couples will be in debt for many years to come trying to build their family, since insurance coverage is limited or non-existent for treatments. There are many resources that will help guide you. Ask questions, do your research, and educate yourself on the treatment options that you will be embarking on. Preparing your body before treatments is important with general health and wellness. Also, know that there are less invasive treatments available, as well as more natural treatments. It is important to know your options and what might be best for you. The doctors will be able to give you information based on your diagnosis. However, only the couple will know what is right for them, or what they are able to do, based on financial and emotional situations.
Today, I try to live for the present…enjoying every moment, taking things day by day, and plan as much to the future as life allows me to. We never know where our destiny will take us. So allow yourself to embrace the journey, and move forward at your own pace. We are all different with similarities when it comes to fertility treatments. But your journey is your own, and the future will take you there.
